Dell unveils PowerProtect upgrades for enhanced cyber resilience
Dell has announced several major upgrades to its PowerProtect data protection portfolio, expanding cyber resilience offerings for organisations managing data across edge, core, and cloud environments.
Expanded appliance capabilities
The introduction of the PowerProtect Data Manager Appliance aims to simplify backup and recovery operations.
This integrated solution unites protection and management into a single system, with Dell stating it can reduce management overhead by half through a streamlined interface. The appliance offers centralised control of both PowerProtect Data Manager and Data Domain, facilitating consistent operations for IT teams.
Edge cyber resilience
For edge computing deployments, Dell has provided a co-engineered solution with its NativeEdge infrastructure.
This integration enables image-level backup and recovery for virtual machines operating at the edge, closing a longstanding protection gap for workloads outside traditional data centres. The PowerProtect platform now also supports Nutanix AHV environments through native integration with Prism Central, eliminating the need for multiple backup tools across different hypervisors.
Security and analytics
A new anomaly detection review analysis page transforms routine backup operations into an intelligence tool for security teams.
The centralised dashboard accelerates ransomware investigations via cohesive management of detected anomalies and provides workflows designed to streamline the incident response process. Enhancements to long-term data retention now include Microsoft Azure support for diverse workloads and improved data lifecycle management across both modern and legacy infrastructure, including AIX platforms.
Cloud-native enhancements
Dell's PowerProtect Backup Services has extended agentless, cloud-native protection to Microsoft Azure Blob Storage, offering organisations further storage flexibility. Additionally, a new advanced ransomware add-on targets government cloud environments and hybrid workloads, broadening the software's capabilities in compliance-heavy sectors.
Data domain improvements
The latest release of the PowerProtect Data Domain Operating System introduces Secure Snapshot for virtual tape libraries (VTL), providing immutability functions that help prevent both human error and external threats from compromising backup data. Support for Data Domain Virtual Edition now allows up to 384TB capacity in Azure, accommodating growth in backup requirements and larger cloud workloads while helping to manage compute costs.
Cyber recovery updates
PowerProtect Cyber Recovery now features enhanced security, including capabilities to vault and restore HYCU-created backups. These changes aim to assure recoverability of critical workloads following destructive attacks or data loss events. Operational efficiency is further improved with expanded capacity support for Azure and the ability to manage multiple Cyber Recovery servers through a single CyberSense server.
Industry perspective
Dell positions these updates as a response to increased organisational concerns about disruptive events and business continuity threats, with figures indicating that nearly four in five organisations expect a major incident within the next year. The portfolio focuses on safeguarding critical information to enable rapid recovery after attacks.
"The latest innovations across the Dell PowerProtect portfolio empower your organisation to build a robust cyber resilience strategy that drives your business forward. By providing smarter, faster, and more efficient cyber resilience, we help you safeguard your most valuable asset-your data-so you can focus on what matters most: innovation and growth," said Katherine Broadhurst, Account Manager, Dell Technologies.
