SonicWall launches Gen 8 NSv virtual firewall range

SonicWall has launched the NSv S, M and L virtual firewalls, completing its Gen 8 NSv virtual firewall range.

The new products launch alongside SonicOS 8.2.2 and Network Security Manager 4.3, both now generally available. They extend the line beyond the NSv XS model, which is aimed at small office and microbusiness workloads.

SonicWall is positioning the expanded range at organisations running workloads across public cloud, private cloud and virtualised data centres. The line is intended to serve customers from small branch operations to larger distributed businesses without requiring changes to management tools or software as deployments grow.

Firewall throughput across the range runs from 2 Gbps on the NSv XS to 14 Gbps on the NSv L. The different models target distinct deployment profiles, from a single branch site or small practice to larger operations such as hospital groups and national retail networks.

Single platform

Each new model runs on the same SonicOS software and is managed through the same NSM console. This allows IT teams and managed service providers to apply policy controls and monitor traffic across environments from a single management layer rather than separate tools.

The full line supports deployment across VMware ESXi, Hyper-V, KVM, AWS, Azure and Proxmox, giving customers a way to use the same virtual firewall family across a mix of on-premise virtual infrastructure and public cloud environments.

The products also include cyber warranty cover from Cysurance as part of SonicWall's security protection suites, which it described as a first for virtual firewalls.

The range includes SonicWall's Real-Time Deep Memory Inspection, Reassembly-Free Deep Packet Inspection and Capture Advanced Threat Protection tools, which are designed to detect and block threats in cloud and virtual workloads.

In a statement, Chandro Prasad outlined the rationale for completing the range.

"Cloud and virtual environments are no longer an afterthought; for most of our customers, they're a core strategy," said Chandro Prasad, Chief Product Officer, SonicWall.

"Completing the NSv line ensures that every customer, from a local office to a multi-state enterprise, runs the exact same unified SonicOS, centralized management and embedded cyber warranty. No one should have to choose between the right fit and enterprise-grade security," Prasad said.

Partner model

The release also targets managed service providers and managed security service providers, which remain central to SonicWall's route to market. Partners can start customers on the smallest NSv XS model and move them to larger versions through the same multi-tenant console as requirements increase.

That approach is designed to avoid replacing or rebuilding security setups as a customer expands. The range is offered on monthly or annual subscriptions, aligning with common managed services billing structures.

Optional support services are also available through MPSS and SonicSentry NOC. Those services are intended to let partners add operational support without increasing staff numbers.

The move reflects a market in which security vendors are trying to provide more consistent controls across traditional data centres, virtual infrastructure and public cloud estates. For channel-focused suppliers such as SonicWall, products that scale under one management framework can help partners standardise customer deployments across a wider range of organisation sizes.

Existing customers and organisations replacing older firewalls can upgrade to the new line based on their environment. SonicWall sells through a global partner network of more than 17,000 partners.
