Cyber-attacks on TikTok & Indonesia prompt security discussion

Wed, 3rd Jul 2024

A recent series of cyber-attacks have exposed vulnerabilities within prominent digital platforms and national infrastructures, stirring discussions on the importance of robust cybersecurity measures.

Earlier this month, TikTok experienced a high-profile hack that compromised several well-known accounts, including those of Paris Hilton and CNN. According to Christian Rebernik, co-founder and co-CEO at Tomorrow University of Applied Sciences, this breach underscores the need to prioritise responsible technology. Rebernik commented, "The reality is, we will continue to see high-profile cyber-attacks unless organisations take all necessary steps to ensure their technology is safe, responsible and sustainable. If all it takes is clicking a DM to compromise accounts, you need to re-evaluate your security posture."

Rebernik emphasised the role of artificial intelligence (AI) in enhancing cybersecurity, noting that AI can analyse vast amounts of data in real time to detect unusual network traffic, patterns, and unauthorised access attempts. He highlighted the importance of AI-powered predictive analytics, which can forecast potential security breaches by examining historical data and identifying trends. Stressing the continuous need for upskilling in data science, machine learning, and cybersecurity, Rebernik remarked, "Having a diverse team of different skills as well as backgrounds, genders, and opinions is also key to draw on a range of experiences and promote more ethical AI behaviours."

Hanna Basha, a Partner at Payne Hicks Beach, provided additional insights on the recent TikTok hack. Basha pointed out the legal implications, noting that individuals sharing private messages have legal rights in privacy, confidence, and data. She advised, "It is now almost impossible to avoid these sorts of attacks and therefore incredibly important that individuals consider carefully what they are sharing on social media platforms. The practical advice must be to try to limit what you do share, even in direct messages, and before sending consider whether it could be damaging or embarrassing if published."

While TikTok’s incident sent ripples through the social media landscape, another significant cybersecurity incident has unfolded in Indonesia. A ransomware attack targeted Indonesia’s national data centre, leading to widespread disruption of public services. The response from the Indonesian government has been commended for its resoluteness in refusing to pay the ransom demands, sending a strong message against capitulating to cyber criminals.

Nigel Ng, Senior Vice President for Asia Pacific and Japan at Tenable, lauded the Indonesian government’s response, stating, "We commend the Indonesian government for its swift and resolute response to the ransomware attack. This steadfastness underscores a commitment to cybersecurity integrity. This incident highlights the critical importance of continuous monitoring and real-time threat detection to mitigate the impact of such sophisticated attacks."

Ng warned of the evolving threat landscape epitomised by LockBit’s repeated involvement in high-profile attacks worldwide. He stressed the need for robust collaboration between government agencies and private sector companies, arguing that shared expertise and coordinated efforts are crucial for enhancing defences against persistent threats.

Indonesia’s proactive measures in addressing the breach and gradually restoring public services have been viewed positively, demonstrating a dedication to maintaining the security and trust of its citizens. "Through shared expertise and coordinated efforts, we can enhance our defences against these persistent threats and build a more resilient digital infrastructure capable of withstanding future cyberattacks," Ng concluded.

These incidents highlight the urgent need for organisations and governments to revisit and bolster their cybersecurity strategies. As the digital landscape continues to evolve, the necessity for advanced, ethical, and inclusive technological solutions becomes ever more critical in safeguarding against future cyber threats.
