The International Criminal Police Organisation (INTERPOL) and global leader in identity technologies, IDEMIA, have renewed their long-standing partnership by launching the advanced BioHUB across all 196 INTERPOL member countries.
The innovative BioHUB is powered by IDEMIA’s latest Multibiometric Identification System (MBIS) and has integrated new-generation algorithms to aid in quicker identification with an improved accuracy rate.
The MBIS, which boasts a more user-friendly interface, is in its first phase of deployment. Introduced in October 2023, this phase focuses on enhancing the identification of potential Persons of Interest (POIs) in police investigations.
The second phase, set to roll out over the next two years, will expand the BioHUB to border control points, enabling up to 1 million daily forensic searches that include fingerprints, palm prints, and portraits. The BioHUB aims to be the highest-performing automated biometric identification system in the market once fully deployed.
The partnership between IDEMIA and INTERPOL first began in 1999 when IDEMIA delivered the original Automated Fingerprint Identification System (AFIS), designed to streamline cooperation amongst police forces from member countries.
This allowed them to access global tools and services such as forensics, fingerprint evidence, and the exchange of forensic data for international investigations. In 2016, INTERPOL integrated IDEMIA's advanced facial recognition capabilities to create the INTERPOL Face Recognition System (IFRS), which has successfully identified thousands of individuals since its launch.
INTERPOL, with its 196 member countries, enables law enforcement agencies across the globe to collaborate in making the world a safer place. Cyril Gout, INTERPOL’s Director of Operational Support and Analysis, emphasises the need for law enforcement to utilise the latest advances in technology to better combat transnational crime. He explains, "INTERPOL’s enhanced partnership with IDEMIA will further help our member countries better protect their borders and communities."
Matt Cole, Group Executive Vice President, Public Security and Identity at IDEMIA, expresses pride in collaborating with INTERPOL again "to continue making the world a safer place for all," and highlights the advancements of MBIS in rapid identification.
